The Journey Here
What motivated you to start working at TAIMATSU?
My interest in environmental issues led me to work as a product designer for a tableware manufacturer specializing in bamboo, a sustainable material. When I decided to change careers, I was determined to find a role that still involved 'high-quality, sustainable products.' This commitment drew me to TAIMATSU, a company that crafts traditional Japanese knives.
Life at Taimatsu
What is the most memorable experience you have had in this job?

The most impactful experience in this role was my involvement as a designer in a restaurant business in Hiroshima. Initially, I strongly associated the company with knives and never imagined I would be involved in the restaurant industry. However, the experience of exchanging ideas with professional chefs and being involved in restaurant creation from scratch was incredibly novel and provided a wealth of learning. In particular, being able to progress with the work while receiving input on aspects that a designer's perspective alone might miss, from the unique viewpoint of chefs – true "food creators" – was a very stimulating and invaluable experience.

What Surprised Me
In what ways do you feel you have grown the most through your work?
Expanding my expertise from product design to graphic design has significantly broadened my expressive capabilities. I now also work on web and print production, daily integrating graphic design-specific perspectives like layout, typography, and information architecture.
Beyond the Role
What experience are you most proud of?

My proudest experience was contributing as a designer to the launch of a restaurant. I joined the project from the concept development stage, where I was responsible for creating visuals that aligned with the establishment's brand identity and target audience. Being entrusted with such a significant project so soon after joining is a valuable experience unique to a startup environment.
If You're Thinking of Joining
What message would you like to share with people considering joining the company?

I think one of the great things about this company is the diverse backgrounds of our employees. While it's certainly beneficial to be able to speak English, there are also people like me who only speak Japanese, so please don't feel too intimidated if you're not confident in your English skills.

About you
Could you tell us about your background and where you are from?
I am from Hiroshima Prefecture. I graduated from an art university in Tokyo.
Outside the work
What do you enjoy doing outside of work, and do you have any favorite places you often visit?

My favorite place is the river. I often take walks along rivers, whether they're in the city or the mountains.
